Antique bronze metal Spanish Colonial Mortar and Pestle circa 16th -17th century. Used in the colonial times of New Spain in Mexico. Also known by "Molcajete” and is the Spanish word for mortar and pestle. The name itself comes from the Aztec words meaning “seasoning” and “bowl". It shows good wear use and patina. The pestle is wooden does not seem to be original to the set.

Mortar and pestle is a set of two simple tools used from the Stone Age to the present day to prepare ingredients or substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder in the kitchen, laboratory, and pharmacy. Most likely this was an apothecary mortar to grind pharmaceuticals.

Measures 4 inches tall and 4 inches at its widest.
