September to October is Hispanic History Month
Hispanic Pirates, particularly during the Golden Age of Piracy, were integral to the broader pirate culture that flourished across the Caribbean and Atlantic regions. These pirates often came from Spanish-speaking nations or territories under Spanish control, such as Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and various parts of Central and South America. In many ways, Spanish Conquistadors can be seen as some of the earliest Hispanic Pirates.
Much like their English, French, and Dutch counterparts, Hispanic Pirates were involved in a range of activities, including raiding ships, smuggling goods, and establishing pirate havens.
Some operated as Privateers, or Corsarios, under a government-issued letter of marque, which legally authorized them to attack enemy ships during times of war. Others were outright Pirates, operating without legal protection and targeting vessels from any nation.
The legacy of Hispanic Pirates continues to resonate in the regions where they once sailed. Their tales have been woven into the folklore of the high seas and are often romanticized as rebels who defied the colonial powers of their time.
