Product Description
Postmortem pictures were photos taken after death. In Victorian times photography was so expensive photos were generally not taken of the living. Postmortem photos allowed families to have an image of the deceased to mourn loved ones. Many bodies were propped up using specialized stands and often the eyes are closed as if sleeping, staked open or painted on.
This Postmortem Cabinet Card is of an older man. You can see the rotting hands. Upon close inspection these are not gloves and are not the same color as the rest of his skin. He has also a blank stare.
