Postmortem pictures were photos taken after death. In Victorian times photography was so expensive photos were generally not taken of the living. Postmortem photos allowed families to have an image of the deceased to mourn loved ones. Many bodies were propped up using specialized stands and often the eyes are closed as if sleeping, staked open or painted on. Notice in this photo the mother appears to be wearing a mourning dress holding her child who appears to be lifeless.
