Product Description

Postmortem pictures were photos taken after death. In Victorian times photography was so expensive photos were generally not taken of the living. Postmortem photos allowed families to have an image of the deceased to mourn loved ones. Many bodies were propped up using specialized stands and often the eyes are closed as if sleeping, staked open or painted on. In the case of this picture it looks they may have been painted on because the look in the picture is so un-natural. An ambrotype is comprised of an underexposed glass negative placed against a dark background.

When open the frame is about 6.5"
