The Baule people inhabit a part of Côte d'Ivoire (African Ivory Coast) between the Komoé and Bandama Rivers that is both forest and savanna land. This Mami Wata mask usually depicts a brightly colored female face surrounded or topped by animals—often a bird. The animals are usually shown in dynamic poses and vivid colors, and they allude to a local story or a proverb.
