The reflecting circle, essentially an octant extended to a full circle–was designed for the purpose of determining longitude by measuring the distance between the moon and a nearby star, (the so-called lunar distance method). Used on Tall Ships before automated navigation equipment. This 19th Century Reflecting Circle is marked Sestrel of London. Sestrel is the Trade Mark brand of Henry Browne & Son who were respected British instrument makers who made fine quality compasses, ships clocks, inclinometers, sextants and chandlery items for over 140 years. The were established in the 19th century in Barking and London. Eclectic gift for any pirate or maritime fan.
